The University Institute of European Studies (IUEE)

The University Institute of European Studies (Institut Universitari d’Estudis Europeus, IUEE) is a public institution created in 1985 by the regional Government of Catalonia (Generalitat) and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). The IUEE is an interdisciplinary centre dedicated to higher education, training and research in European affairs. Our faculty includes experts from different departments of the UAB (Law, Economics, History, Sociology, Political Science and International Relations) and from other universities.
In 2009 the IUEE was recognized by the European Commission as one of the Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence.

As a centre for advanced studies in European integration, the IUEE is responsible for the academic organization of postgraduate programs such as the Ph.D. Program in European Integration and International Relations, the Official Master in European Integration and the Master in European Policies on International Cooperation for Development.

The IUEE articulates its research activities through different specialized and interdisciplinary groups funded by public national and international institutions. The main areas of research and interest are the integration process, European Mediterranean policies, multilevel governance, international relations, law, accessibility and the political economy of integration.

Finally, the IUEE offers education services, produces studies, reports and evaluations upon request and provides expert advice on European issues to both public and private institutions. With the aim of improving general knowledge on European issues, the IUEE also regularly organizes public conferences and workshops.

The research team


Dr. Blanca Vilà Director of the IUEE Professor in Private International Law and European Law at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). She has held a Jean Monnet Chair in European Law since 1990 and she was vice-Rector of European Affairs of the UAB between 1987 and 1990. Professor at the College of Europe since 1990, she served as national expert of the European Commission Legal Service from 1994 until 1997. Her main research areas are Economic Law, Migration and Gender equality. She has published extensively in these fields.		Dr. Francesc Morata i Tierra Project Director Professor of Political Sciences at the UAB, he holds a Jean Monnet Chair ad personam in European Integration. Former Director of the IUEE (2004-2009) he has been a Visiting Professor at the universities of Florence, Bologna, Bologna University Centre (Buenos Aires), ITAM (Mexico), Nanging and Kunming (China). His main research areas are Europeanization, European public policies, multilevel governance and environmental studies. He has published extensively in these fields.

Dr. Andrea Noferini Project Coordinator Research Fellow at the IUEE and Associate Professor at the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). He holds a PhD in Politics and Economics of Developing Countries from the University of Florence. He also has an MA in Political Sciences from the UPF. His areas of research are cohesion policy, development and cooperation and public policy. He has participated in several research projects financed by the EC and the Italian and Spanish Ministries.		Marta Mir Izard Project Assistant She holds a degree in Audiovisual Communication from the Ramon Llull University in Barcelona and a degree in Political Sciences from the UAB. Her areas of interest and research are International Relations and the European Union.

Lucia Alexandra Popartan Head of Department of Projects Research Fellow at the IUEE and member of the EU-Gov research group in Multilevel Governance. Her research interests include Europeanization, multilevel governance, EU enlargement and Cohesion policy.		Juan Antonio Bermejo Department of Projects He holds a degree in Political Science from the UAB and a Master in European Integration from the IUEE. Since 2006 he has worked in the project department of the IUEE as full time project assistant.
